Reaching a confident diagnosis prior to embarking on a treatment plan is fundamental to our approach at Great Northern Physiotherapy.
Most of the time a thorough Physical assessment and careful analysis of your history from one of our team is enough to diagnose your problem and embark on a treatment plan, however there are times when further investigations are needed and in those circumstances we have fast access to MRI and diagnostic ultrasound scanning.

Ultrasound
Diagnostic Ultrasound scanning is one of the most useful and versatile methods of imaging muscles, tendons, joints, nerves and ligaments. Due to its dynamic nature and ease of access diagnostic ultrasound complements a physiotherapy assessment extremely well and it can be used as part of your Physiotherapy assessment to ensure you have the most accurate diagnosis and the the very best physiotherapy treatment to help your recovery. As well as it’s diagnostic abilities it can be very effective at tracking progression of certain conditions and can help to inform us on effective treatment selection.
We have made significant investments in the clinic in the latest training and equipment for this service. We use an up-to-date, high specification scanner that provides us with great quality images. Our diagnostic ultrasound service is led by Chartered Physiotherapist and CASE accredited sonographer, Phil Williams. Phil has extensive experience as a specialist in Musculoskeletal medicine and sonography and holds a Masters degree in advanced clinical practice and Post graduate certificate in Diagnostic Ultrasound. Phil utilises this unique skillset as part of his initial assessments with patients in order to establish a confident diagnosis and set a structured rehab plan.
All our diagnostic ultrasound imaging is carried out as part an enhanced Physiotherapy assessment, for booking please select “Initial assessment with diagnostic ultrasound”. Please note, our diagnostic ultrasound service is not suitable for spinal structures, in those cases we have fast access to MRI.
MRI
In some instances ultrasound is unable to adequately assist with a diagnosis. Certain deep tissues and spinal structures are not well visualised with Ultrasound and in those instances an MRI is sometimes needed. We work with a local private provider to ensure fast access and competitively priced MRI scans. We will make sure that you are safe to be referred for this type of scan and will arrange all the necessary referral paper work for you following a detailed physical assessment with one of our team, our Physiotherapy team have extensive hospital experience in referring for MRI safely and interpreting MRI reports.
“Being able to offer this service in house without the need for any GP referral is a real asset to our clinic and provides patients with fast access to the latest in musculoskeletal care.”
