At Great Northern Physiotherapy, we see firsthand how resilient the human body can be—with the right guidance, commitment, and care. One of the most inspiring examples of this is Fiona, who recently completed an incredible comeback journey at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Gainesville, Florida (March 2025).
Fiona entered the year with high hopes, targeting top performances on the international stage. But an untimely injury put everything at risk. For many, this would have been a full stop. Instead, for Fiona, it became a comma—an opportunity to pause, regroup, and rebuild.
Over several weeks, once a diagnosis was made, Fiona worked closely with our clinical team through a carefully phased rehab programme. This included hands-on physiotherapy, progressive strength work, running drills, and key interventions such as acupuncture and a hyaluronic acid (HA) injection to support joint health and manage pain. Every stage was tailored around Fiona’s goals and adjusted as her condition improved—striking a careful balance between recovery and performance.
With just days to go before flying out, Fiona made the brave decision to compete—and what followed was nothing short of exceptional.
At the start of the competition week, Fiona tackled a demanding 8K cross-country course in the Florida heat, finishing in 35:43 and securing a brilliant 3rd place finish for Great Britain. Just six days later, she lined up again for the 10K road race and delivered another outstanding performance—crossing the line in 42:41 to take 2nd place against a world-class field. Fiona’s individual results were instrumental in helping Great Britain secure Team Gold in both the cross-country and 10K events.
To come back from injury and perform at this level—claiming two individual medals and contributing to two team golds on the world stage—is a testament to Fiona’s grit, focus, and trust in the process.
Super Ageing in Action — and the Power of a Courageous, Empowered Approach
Fiona’s story is a powerful example of what we call super ageing—the ability to not only maintain, but actually enhance physical performance and ambition as we grow older. It challenges outdated ideas about age being a limit, and instead reframes it as a phase full of possibility.
At Great Northern Physiotherapy, we believe this is where our unique approach makes a real difference. We don’t just treat injuries—we empower people to take ownership of their bodies and their goals. We work alongside them, not just to restore function, but to reignite potential.
Fiona’s comeback journey was shaped by two of our core values:
We are Courageous – stepping up to challenge, even when the outcome is uncertain. Fiona and the clinical team chose not to retreat from the goal, but to face it head-on.
We Empower – giving individuals the tools, knowledge, and belief to take control of their health and performance. Fiona wasn’t just treated—she was actively supported and equipped to thrive.
Her performances remind us that physiotherapy is about more than rehab. It’s about helping people live boldly, pursue big goals, and continue to surprise themselves.
Fiona’s comeback shows that setbacks don’t define us. How we respond—and who we have in our corner—makes all the difference.
We couldn’t be prouder to have been part of this chapter. Well done, Fiona!
