Dietetic and Nutritional Support
At Great Northern Physiotherapy we understand how important nutrition is in order to achieve optimum physical health. Emerging research has shown how our dietary habits can affect so many long term physical and psychological conditions. As such we are delighted to be able to offer specialist help in making sure you get this aspect of your rehabilitation right.
Samantha Howard leads our Dietetic and Nutritional Support Service. Samantha is a registered Dietitian, member of the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC) and British Dietetic Association. This ensures that your dietary and nutritional support is of the highest standard and in line with current evidence based medicine.
Our Dietetic and Nutritional Support Service is designed to be bespoke to your specific needs. Some common areas we can help with are:
We work with our clients on an individual basis to identify changes to their diet and lifestyle that will support weight reduction and maintenance. We do not encourage quick-fix dieting. We know that many of our clients are well informed when it comes to knowing which foods are good for them and which ones aren’t so good. From our experience what many people struggle with is putting it into practice. How to shop and plan healthy meals. How to cope with holidays and meals out. How to juggle the pressures of a busy work and home life and make time for themselves. We provide tailor made information, advice and dietary plans to fit in with the demands of your life.
Healthy Eating for Inflammatory and Long-term conditions
The phrase ‘you are what you eat’ comes to mind. Our bodies require a regular supply of the right nutrients to perform at their best. We all have different bodies and therefore differing nutritional needs. Sometimes when we are struggling with long term conditions, fatigue and chronic pain even daily tasks such as shopping and cooking can be a challenge and this can lead to unhealthy food and lifestyle choices. We can support you to develop a tailored healthy eating and lifestyle plan to nourish your body, improve your energy levels and enhance your health.
Gastrointestinal conditions and Food Allergy / Intolerance. Including IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) and Coeliac Disease
We work with clients to help manage symptoms, improve the nutritional content of their diet and improve quality of life. Many of our clients report that symptoms such as pain, bloating, diarrhoea, constipation and urgency have a debilitating effect on their lives preventing them from working, travelling or socialising with friends and family. Dietary manipulation along with appropriate lifestyle choices is an effective treatment for gastrointestinal conditions and food allergy / intolerance. We provide tailored elimination and reintroduction plans and will ensure that any maintenance diet is nutritionally complete. Additional dietary supplements may be recommended on an individual basis.
What to expect when you see us in clinic?
We will spend some time at the start of the appointment getting to know you, understanding your medical and dietetic concerns and finding out about treatment you have previously tried. We will ask questions about your medical history, we will want to know if you are on any regular medication, we may ask about your social circumstances and we will talk to you about your current diet. We will ask about your normal day and how food fits into your routine. We will normally take weight and height measurements and calculate BMIs. Alternative measurements may be taken depending on your clinical condition and mobility, these will be discussed with you on an individual basis.
We will then make a clinical assessment and provide personal dietary advice. You will usually be given written information at the appointment to reinforce any advice given. Sometimes additional information will be sent in the post or via email following your appointment. A short report will be written and sent to you following the appointment, this is normally copied to your GP and we are happy to send additional copies to relevant health professionals and workplaces at your request.
